My iDAT projects at the University of Plymouth - research in Art, Science and Technology
The reason why I chose to do this course is because I have realized that the art of today is not the same as it used to be. Art is not just about aesthetics and creating beautiful things to please the eye anymore. Nowadays, art has begun to spread in all directions, entering other fields and blurring the boundaries. A contemporary artist will most likely be multi-skilled and a specialist in more than one field. This programme is encouraging this transdisciplinarity, particularly the synthesis of art, science and technology and various collaborations between these fields. It recognizes how significant and beneficial such projects are to our culture and society.
Needless to say, I fully agree with this approach. We are living in a fast advancing world where new technologies and ideas are constantly being created. Art can' t be excluded from this progress since there is so much potential for its growth and development in this new fertile ground.
I am certain that for me, someone who has a background in Fine Art but whose other interests lay way beyond this field, this course will prove to be very engaging.
